While looking around at
LOLMac I checked out some of the links from the About post to see if they were any kind of nice. For some reason I hadn't come across
MacGyverOnline yet, which looks like a nice site with a good deal of information.
And fanfic!
That got my kind of excited.
However, apart from the fic being posted on a message board, which looks kind of annoying (might not actually be, but I've no experience with this way of doing it and I'm a tad wary of new things. It'd be more difficult to search by genre at the very least), they specifically state they don't allow slash.
They also don't allow RPF and explicit or graphic violence or sexual material, which I can understand, but not allowing G, PG and R-rated slash bothers me, especially as there's absolutely no mention of not allowing G, PG and R-rated heterosexual romantic fanfic.
As I don't do any kind of ship with this show (not that I don't see the subtext), I don't have much of an interest in Mac slash, but explicitly not allowing it while not making any mention of heterosexual pairings? Not cool.
The Rules mention something about inappropriate content, listing some kinds of discrimination as not allowed but not really mentioning discrimination in general, and they have something against advocacy posts. Which I can understand if you're going with a fic-only message board and these sorts of topics can lead to massive wankfests with everyone getting upset and no one reading the precious fic.
I've not even read any of the fic yet, so I don't know if there's anything half-decent and worth reading to be found there, but this whole thing makes me not want to have much to do with the whole place.
Still, maybe I'll contact the admin. S/he might have some misunderstandings regarding the nature of slash and the possibility of it actually being family-friendly. I know I was surprised when I first came across PG-rated Garak/Bashir.
Since the FAQ mentions something about some vegetarians including white meat in their diets (*sigh* Those people are
NOT vegetarians, folks. Stop saying they are.
Please), I should maybe read some more of the site and forum so I can send a more extensive email.
If it turns out to be some manlove=icky thing, I'm
so out of there.
One thing I did find out, however, was that Dana Elcar has died. Not that knowing this makes me happy or anything, but I've been wondering whether he was still alive.
ETA: I've just read through bits of the forum, mostly the "Is Mac vegetarian" thread, and it's making me just a little twitchy. They're saying some rather idiotic stuff there like that shearing doesn't hurt the sheep (which isn't true. It also ignores all the non-shearing parts of their life and the fact that sentient creatures are used as property), that animal b12 is somehow superior to the stuff from supplements (never mind that it's made by bacteria and that the animals get it from the very same supplements, so you just get supplements with cholesterol, saturated fats and animal protein. And SUFFERING. Yum), the usual nonsense about soy (which is all we eat, natch) being a health hazard, general misconceptions about veganism, and the occasional dismissive attitude to a) veg*n food, just because they can't make tofu taste good (newsflash: it's a plant-based diet, not a tofu-based diet. You're allowed, even encouraged, to eat other things) and b) something they see as a belief system rather than a system of ethics and making it seem like a personal choice thing, and an eye-roll-worthy one at that.
Part of me wants to march over there and write up a nice, non-convert-y, polite post explaining all of these things neutrally and concisely, but somehow I think this would end in some flame war with me getting accused of all manner of nasty things, and I really don't feel like that right now.
Elsewhere the string of symbols making up  is used, presumably to indicate someone loves something or other.
Just... No. Fail. No Biscuit. Go kiss the troll now. Go. *Now*
A quick look didn't lead to me finding anything about slash or shipping in general, so I'll probably still register so I can PM the person who posted the fic guidelines. At the very least I would like an answer to that before deciding whether or not that forum is worth my time and energy.
